Jeanette Small - therapist

My approach is eclectic, which means that I take advantage of therapeutic tools from different theoretical perspectives. Every theory about human nature and mental health is limited, but useful. Human beings are complex and benefit from exploring their lived experiences from several points of view.

I believe that

  • establishing a trusting relationship is an important foundation (person-centered approach),

  • the psyche is embodied and the body holds memories (somatic approach),

  • unconscious material is often expressed in dreams and behaviors (psychodynamic approach),

  • people sometimes need help developing behavioral skills and habits (behavioral approach),

  • we sometimes need to think logically through issues (cognitive approach),

  • finding meaning in experiences makes them easier to tolerate (existential approach),

  • exploring their relationship with the divine can be deeply healing (transpersonal approach),

  • we sometimes must focus on relationship patterns from our family of origin (attachment theory),

  • moving out of suffering necessitates processing of difficult feelings (affective approach),

  • we must work through age or life stage specific challenges (developmental approach),

  • focus on the present moment without pathologizing one’s experience (gestalt psychology), or

  • address cultural differences and their impact on a person’s life (social psychology).

Focusing on what my client needs in the moment is more important to me than staying within the confines of a particular approach. I tend to be personable and approachable.

Therapy often brings up unpleasant feelings. We talk about and explore things people usually tend to try to avoid thinking about. I try to create a welcoming environment and a supportive atmosphere, so the exploration feels as safe as possible.

Genuine Care

Meeting my clients where they are at, listening to their point of view and helping them identify their goals is the beginning of our work together. My intention is to help you reach your goals while supporting your process at your pace. While seeing the best in you, I will offer honest feedback to help you grow, see your strengths and accept your authentic self. Your feelings and your thoughts are welcome. You are invited to be yourself, be seen and heal your wounds.

A bit about me

I was born in Moldova when it was part of the Soviet Union, raised in Germany, finished high school and completed my undergraduate and graduate studies in California. My husband and I moved to Central Oregon with our first-born son in 2013, and birthed our second son in Bend, OR. I have been a professional artist working in a variety of media since my teenage years, and specializing in printmaking for over a decade. I love to read and am partial to science fiction and science non-fiction. My favorite outdoor activities include hiking and communing with plants and non-human animals. I love my cat somewhat more than he loves me.
